MIST AND MOUNTAIN INTERNATIONAL POETRY PRIZE 2023(SHORTLIST)

The eagerly anticipated longlist of selected entries will be unveiled in December, marking the next chapter in our exhilarating poetic journey.

 MIST AND MOUNTAIN INTERNATIONAL POETRY PRIZE 2023

Writers are invited to submit an original poem in English on the theme of “Memory” to 

poetrymistandmountain@gmail.com  before 15 November 2023. 
The winning poet and two runners-up will be announced on Sunday, 1 January 2024, with the publication of their winning entries on the Mist and Mountain Creative Residency website and Mist and Mountain Creative Residency’s Facebook.
The winner will receive £150.
Two runners-ups will each receive £50.

ENTRY RULES:

1. MIST AND MOUNTAIN INTERNATIONAL POETRY PRIZE 2023 is an international  
     poetry competition open to any writer over the age of 18.
2. The theme for the competition is ‘Memory’.
4. All entries must be in English.
5. Poems can be any length up to a maximum of 40 lines.
6. Poems must be titled and entirely the original, unpublished work of the entrant.
7. Submissions must be entered under the entrant’s real name.
8. Entries must be typed in 12-point black font unless a different appearance is an essential part of your entry.
9. You may enter up to four poems in the competition.
8. Copyright of all poems remains with the entrants, but the winning three poets hereby grant the competition organizers the right to publish their winning entries online.
10. The closing date for entries is midnight (UK time) on Wednesday, 15 November 2023(Extended deadline).
11. Mist and Mountain Creative Residency will shortlist entries for final judging.
12. Dr Claire Askew will judge the shortlisted entries. 

About the Judge: 
Dr Claire Askew’s debut poetry collection, This changes things (Bloodaxe) was published in 2016, having placed runner-up for the 2014 Edwin Morgan Poetry Award.  Her second collection, How To Burn A Woman (Bloodaxe), followed in 2021 and won the 2022 Saltire Scottish Poetry Book of the Year Award.  Claire holds a PhD in Creative Writing (Poetry) from the University of Edinburgh and has been a Scottish Book Trust Reading Champion, a Jessie Kesson Fellow, and the University of Edinburgh’s Writer in Residence.) She currently lives in Cumbria with her black cat, Winifred Sanderson.

13. The judges’ decision is final, and competition organisers are unable to comment on individual entries.
14. The winner and runners-up will be announced on Friday, 1 January 2024. The winning poems will be published on the Mist and Mountain Creative Residency website and the Mist and Mountain Creative Residency’s Facebook.
16. First Prize is £150 and a large, bespoke commemorative plaque.
17. Two runners-up will each receive £50 and a small, bespoke commemorative plaque. 
18. All entries – including the author’s real name, address, and contact telephone number, must be submitted electronically via the following email address:

19. The poet retains the copyright of their submitted work, but by entering the competition, they grant the organizers a non-exclusive license to publish their work in any media for the purpose of promoting the competition.
20. Disqualification: The organizers reserve the right to disqualify any entry that does not meet the entry requirements, contains plagiarized or offensive material, or is in violation of any laws or regulations.
21. Agreement: By entering the competition, poets agree to abide by these rules and to the judges’ decisions.

Dr. Claire Askew: 
It is a huge privilege to be invited to judge this esteemed competition.  I’d like to encourage you to enter, even if you’ve never entered a poetry competition before: I’m looking forward to reading a wealth of poetry from a wide range of voices.  I’ll be looking first and foremost for the original and the unusual.  I’m always intrigued by poems that can show me something I’ve seen a thousand times before anew.
 
HOW TO ENTER:

Save your poem as a Word document (.doc or .docx), or a pdf. Include ‘Mist and Mountain International Poetry Competition’ in the filename, followed by your poem’s title. If entering more than one poem, start each poem on a new page, and include all the titles in the filename.
Do not include identifying information in your document.
Pay the competition entry fee via PayPal and send us the details in the body of the email.

 as an attachment. Include ‘Mist and Mountain International Poetry Competition’ in the subject line.  Please include your name, address, and a brief bio (200 words) in the body of the email.
 
POEMS: 40 lines max, excluding title but including stanza breaks. 
SUBMISSION: Email 
ENTRY FEE – £5 per poem, £9 for two, £12 for three, £15 for four poems and £18 for 5 poems. You may submit as many poems as you wish with the correct fee.
